Islamabad, April 07, 2015 (PPI-OT): “We have neglected investing in human resource and ICT in the past while our neighbouring countries embarked upon this journey in the decades of 60s and 70s”, said the Federal Minister for Planning and Development Prof. Ahsan Iqbal while chairing round table conference on Geographical Information System GIS in Physical Planning, Resource Management and Governance today.

“Planning Commission considers GIS as instrumental in steering the planning machinery in right direction and extends all kind of support in creating GIS National policy in consultation with all the stakeholders. We are also moving toward open data system to make public details of PSDP projects on website for public scrutiny”, he said.

He acknowledged GIS as a medium of developing socio-economic development and governance in ICT driven modern world and as a platform to empower citizens and enabling them to get services. “Vision 2025 envisages inclusive growth which aims at enhancing entrepreneurship by improving ICT skills of young population with equity and making information publicly available”, he added.

He said, “Confidentiality Phobia of the government must end not only to promote accountability at individual and departmental level but also ensure information access of the people to encourage public participation”. The Federal Minister invited academia, private sector and government departments to come up with suggestions and project initiatives as to how geographical information system can be made integrated program in future.

The Federal Minister highlighted the importance of national level data collection in the planning and policy making and showed concern on currently fragmented geographic information system. “One of the reasons of our chequered planning history is inability to produce data on scientific lines. The objective of our reform agenda is to restore the credibility of our institutions in performance delivery through open and reliable data system and skilled professionals”, he added. The round table conference was attended by Chairman SUPARCO, Surveyor General of Pakistan, experts from Geological Survey of Pakistan, academia etc.
