United States Deputy Principal Assistant Secretary of Defence meets Foreign Secretary

Islamabad, June 09, 2012 (PPI-OT): Foreign Secretary Jalil Abbas Jilani and US Deputy Principal Assistant Secretary of Defence Peter Lavoy met today to exchange views on bilateral issues and regional developments.

They reviewed the ongoing discussions between Pakistan and the US with regard to counter-terrorism and security cooperation and the status of the current negotiations on the ground lines of communication.

The Foreign Secretary described the threat posed by terrorism to regional peace and security as a common challenge. He reiterated Pakistan’s firm resolve to continue the fight against terrorism and extremism.

Both sides also discussed peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan. The Foreign Secretary emphasized that Pakistan will continue to extend full support to an Afghan-lead and Afghan-owned peace process.

Peter Lavoy also briefed the Foreign Secretary on US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta’s recent visit to the region.
