United States Consul General Michael Dodman inaugurates Sindh Community Mobilization Program

Karachi, December 06, 2013 (PPI-OT): U.S. Consul General Michael Dodman along with Sindh Senior Minister of Education Nisar Ahmed Khurolaunched the United States Agency for International Development’s (USAID) Sindh Community Mobilization Program (CMP)in Shireen Jinnah Colony, Karachi, which will supplement Government of Sindh reform efforts to improve education administration, community involvement, child nutrition, and improve public-private partnerships.

Speaking at the inauguration event, U.S. Consul General Michael Dodman said, “True and lasting development starts with education. That’s why support for education is one of the U.S. Government’s top priorities in Pakistan. The Government of Sindh and USAID are also determined to work together to enhance the level of girls’ enrollment in schools. All these efforts will improve the quality of and access to education for children of Sindh, especially girls.”

The Community Mobilization Program is a key component of USAID’s wide-ranging Sindh Basic Education Program (SBEP) which supports the Government of Sindh’s Education and Literacy Department in Sukkur, Khairpur, Larkana, Qambar-Shahdadkot, Jacobabad, Kashmore and Dadu districts, as well as in Kemari, Lyari, Orangi, Gadap and Bin Qasim areas of Karachi.

SBEP will increase and sustain student enrollment in primary, middle and secondary schools in these target areas and support the Government of Sindh’s reforms to merge, consolidate, and upgrade schools. SBEP will also construct 120 new school buildings and provide additional support for a further 280 schools within the target areas. As part of this broader effort, the Community Mobilization Program will increase communities’ involvement in the Government of Sindh’s reform efforts, improve community and local government coordination to increase girls’ enrollment, improve child nutrition through research that informs innovation and good practice, and sustain community mobilization through new public-private partnerships.

Addressing the audience of over three hundred schoolchildren, teachers, and parents Mr. Nisar Ahmed Khuhro, Sindh Senior Minister of Education, thanked USAID and the Consul General for this major educational investment in Sindh and promised that the Community Mobilization Program would receive Government of Sindh’s full cooperation.

The Community Mobilization Program launch coincides with ‘The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence’ (November 25 – December 10). It is a global campaign originating at Rutgers University, USA and led by the United Nations. It is widely celebrated by civil society organizations throughout Pakistan.
