United States Agency for International Development commits $81 Million for stage-I of Kurram Tangi Dam

Lahore, March 07, 2014 (PPI-OT): In yet another significant development for financial arrangements to implement vital projects in water and hydropower sectors, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has committed to provide a grant of US $81 million to the Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) for construction of the Stage-I of Kurram Tangi Dam Project.

Kurram Tangi Dam is a component of the Federal Government’s least-cost energy generation and water storage development strategy. The strategy aims at improving the ratio of hydel electricity in the system to provide relief to the people in addition to developing water storage capacity for agriculture in the country.

It is pertinent to mention that the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) approved the Stage-I of Kurram Tangi Dam Project at a cost of Rs. 12.662 billion in its meeting held on last Thursday.

Stage-I of the project includes Kaitu Weir Irrigation and Power component, which is scheduled to be completed in two years. It will develop irrigated agriculture of 16,380 acres of land in addition to hydel generation of about 19 megawatt (MW). It will also provide water for domestic use of about 48,500 people. Benefits of the Stage-I of Kurram Tangi Dam have been estimated at Rs.1.5 billion per annum.

Kurram Tangi Dam Project is located in North Waziristan Agency of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA). WAPDA has planned to implement the project in two stages. The work on the Stage-II of the project will also be started soon.

Kurram Tangi Dam Project is of immense importance for poverty alleviation and socio-economic uplift of the backward areas through development of irrigated agriculture in North Waziristan. Kurram Tangi Dam, with a gross storage capacity of 1.2 million acre feet of water will irrigate about 3, 63,000 acres of land and generate 83.4 MW of low-cost hydel electricity.
