United Nations Industrial Development Organization launches World’s largest cleantech idea competition Global Cleantech Innovation Programme in Pakistan

Islamabad, June 26, 2014 (PPI-OT): The Cleantech Competition and Accelerator Programme for SMEs and startups has been launched to support aspiring entrepreneurs from Punjab and Sindh who are working to tackle today’s most urgent environmental challenges. The Programme is a joint venture between The Global Environment Facility (GEF), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and Cleantech Open.

Mr. Esam Alqararah, the UNIDO Representative in Pakistan, highlighted that UNIDO’s initiatives in Pakistan would promote the energy solutions and establish the clean technology innovation ecosystems models to support economic and industrial development in the country.

He elaborated that the competition and accelerator programme falls under the umbrella programme of UNIDO and GEF known as the Global Cleantech Innovation Programme (GCIP). Under the GCIP, clean technology entrepreneurs and startups would continuously be trained, mentored and assessed, with an opportunity to connect with potential investors and partners.

The GCIP has so far initiated “national accelerators” in Armenia, India, Malaysia, Pakistan, Turkey and South Africa. The GCIP in Pakistan aims to support clean technology innovators and entrepreneurs in Pakistan, and build the national capacity for clean technologies.

The project will also focus on the local entrepreneurial ecosystem and policy framework. In its first year of operation, the programme will focus on four cleantech technologies: energy efficiency, renewable energy, water efficiency and waste-to-energy technologies.

The GCIP in Pakistan is being implemented by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) with the support of the Pakistan Council for Science and Technology (PCST), National Productivity Organization (NPO), Pakistan Institute of Management (PIM), and the Centre for Climate Change and Development (CCCD). The Cleantech Open the biggest cleantech accelerator in the United States of America is the programme’s global partner.

Dr Mudassir Asrar, Chairperson Pakistan Council of Science and Technology (PCST), applauded the commencement of the project and highlighted that it can play a catalytic role in harnessing the innovative solutions not only to bridge the gap between energy demand and supply but also connecting all the key stakeholders for the Cleantech entrepreneurial ecosystem.

He appreciated that it would provide an opportunity to entrepreneurs in Pakistan to contribute in the efforts to address the Cliamte Change challenges through their innovative clean technologies developed in the country.

Being a part of the UNIDO’s global initiative, Dr. Pradeep Monga, Director of the Energy and Climate Change Branch at UNIDO, conveyed his excitement on launching of GCIP in Pakistan with the partnership of the GEF and the Cleantech Open to engage with energy entrepreneurs and small businesses in Pakistan for the promotion of clean technology innovations.
