Tuwairqi’s celebrates highest ever steel production in country

Lahore, June 10, 2013 (PPI-OT): Pakistan’s first state-of-the-art, environment friendly and largest private sector steel manufacturing project worth $350 million under the umbrella of Tuwairqi Steel Mills (TSML) has achieved the milestone of 100 percent production of iron-making from its plant.

The event was organised by the TSML at a local hotel here on Monday where experts from various countries including United States highlighted technical and financial aspects of the project.

Giving details regarding project, TSML Director Project and country head Zaigham Adil Rizvi said that his organization has achieved 100 per cent iron production during Plant Demonstration Test (PDT) conducted under the supervision of MIDREX experts which is unique group of its nature in the world in Direct Reduced Iron ( DRI) technology.

Zaigham Adil Rizvi further said that this DRI plant is an environment-friendly as well as noiseless plant as it emitted just one-third of carbon pollution as compare to other iron manufacturing plants, adding that it was the first-ever DRI plant in the country which was producing better quality DRI than it was being produced in Saudi Arabia and other plants of regional countries since it met the international standards in quality.

The plant has the capacity of 1.28 Million Ton per Year (MTPY) and it is based natural gas based cutting edge technology which produces high grade steels used in wide industrial applications..

It is pertinent to note that world crude steel production was 1.49 billion tons in 2011 whereas share of Pakistan in it was just 4.5 million tons. The per capita steel consumption of Pakistan is at 38 kg against a global average of 215 kg while the annual demand for steel in the country is approximately at 7.63 MTPY.

The DRI is used in Electric Arc Furnace, Induction Furnace, LD Converter and Cupola Furnace with different rations.

Zaigham Adil told media that steel produced in the plant had highest demand in the world including India but group’s high-ups are determined to sell its production within country so that maximum employment could be generated and economic activities could be accelerated, he added.

Paul, a MIDREX expert and project developer from the United States, also addressed the participants and shared his experience with them. A well number of steel traders and manufacturers were present on the occasion.
