Training session on Alternate Dispute Resolution and Mediation held at Punjab University Gender Studies Department
Lahore: Punjab University Department of Gender Studies, in collaboration with International Finance Corporation (IFC), organized a training sessions on “Alternate Dispute Resolution and Mediation” here on Thursday. IFC Project Officer Asfandyar Ali Khan was the chief guest on the occasion while Department Incharge Chairperson Prof Dr Samar Fatima, Nazia Abdul Ghaffar, Raana Malik, other faculty members and a large number of students from various departments were present on the occasion.
Addressing on the occasion, Asfandyar Ali Khan said mediation as part of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) process is a well-recognized mechanism for resolution of disputes. He said mediation saved time and cost of dispute resolution. He said litigants and disputants were encouraged to resort to ADR. Asfandyar Ali Khan said awareness was required among stakeholders including academic institutions, faculties and student-body in field of ADR. He said IFC was providing ADR and mediation in Pakistan for resolution of commercial and financial disputes. He said it had been instrumental in supporting Karachi Centre for dispute resolution in Karachi. Now, there were efforts to support ADR interventions in Lahore with stakeholders.
Prof Dr Samar Fatima, in her address, said we had the Islamic obligation to resolve disputes at individual as well as collective level. She said IFC had been making efforts in this regard. Department’s “Gender Research and Counselling” had also been providing facilities in research to its students, she added. She appreciated the efforts of department faculty member Nazia Abdul Ghaffar and her organizing team for holding training session.
