Trade Development Authority of Pakistan in collaboration with Sindh Agricultural Growth Project organizes seminar on ‘Potential Exports of Chillies’

Karachi, September 22, 2016 (PPI-OT):TDAP in collaboration with Sindh Agricultural Growth Project (SAGP) organized a Seminar on Potential of Export of Chillies on 20th September 2016 at Marriot Hotel, Karachi. The objective of the seminar is to create awareness about potential of export of Chillies among growers/exporters.

Around 150 growers from Kunri and other chillies growing areas of Sindh and exporters of Red Chillies attended the seminar. Mr. Sikandar Hayat Bosan, Federal Minister for Food Security and Research attended the seminar as Chief Guest besides Muzaffar Hussain Shah, Senator and Chairman Starred Senate Committee on Food Security and Research. During the seminar, the speakers emphasized that adopting modern techniques of growing chillies will increase the quality of Chillies of Pakistan which will increase export from Pakistan.

Trade of chilli plays an important role in the local economy. Pakistan is among the five most chilli-producing nations of the world, and is one of the most prominent exporters of Chillies. In 2014-15, Pakistan exported worth US$ 4.7 Million of Chillies (powder/whole) to the world. The top importing countries of the Chillies in the world are the USA, UK, Netherlands, Germany, Japan, Malaysia and some countries from the Middle East.

While Pakistan’s major exports of Chillies are to Saudi Arab, UAE, Mexico, USA, Kuwait etc. Top exporters of Chillies in the world are India with market share of 36%, China 11%, Bangladesh (8%) Peru (8%) and others (31%), while Pakistan has 6% market share. It has been estimated that Pakistan has a potential to export 90,000 tonnes of Chillies per year, which would help bring the country much needed foreign exchange of 47 million US dollars per year.
