Speaker National Assembly of Pakistan Fehmida Mirza calls on UAE Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research

Islamabad: Pakistan and the UAE are more than just friends – we have the same faith and social fabric and enjoy extremely close and fraternal relations based on common faith, traditions, deep-rooted cultural affinities, geographic proximity and identity of interests.

This was stated by Dr. Fehmida Mirza, Speaker National Assembly of Pakistan during her meeting with Shaikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan , UAE Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, in Abu Dhabi this afternoon, says a press release received here today from Dubai.

Dr. Fehmida Mirza accompanied by Pakistan’s Ambassador in UAE Mr. Jamil Ahmed Khan briefed the UAE Minister about the worst flood situation in Pakistan especially in Sindh. She said that 800-900mm rainfall in the last three weeks in 21 out of 23 districts of Sindh, has made the situation unmanageable for the local authorities, as millions of people have been badly affected who need immediate assistance.

She said that time is running out for 6.5 million people, who are out there in the open, as rising water levels have devastated the rural districts.

Speaker National Assembly also appreciated the humanitarian efforts of UAE and its continuing support and assistance to Pakistan in times of natural disasters and said that this stance of UAE asserts the depth of relations between the UAE and Pakistan.

She thanked the UAE led by the President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan for standing beside Pakistan in times of trial, especially during the natural disasters that struck several parts of the country.

The speaker appreciated the role of Shaikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al-Nahyan, and said that he has always shown support for Pakistan in ‘thick and thin’ and this support translates into concrete investment in Pakistan and is among the most closest friends of Pakistan.

Sheikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak said that the close ties between Pakistan and UAE are unparalleled and ‘when Pakistanis suffer due to such calamities, we in UAE feel the same pain. Expressing strong solidarity with Pakistan, Shaikh Nahyan said that UAE will exert every effort to support Pakistan and its people and pray to Allah to make them overcome any obstacle of life safely and to enable them to achieve their aspirations.

He assured Dr Mirza that, with the cooperation and coordination of the Pakistani missions in the UAE, they would work to provide relief to the suffering people. He said that he wishes Pakistan prosperity and looks forward to see it grow as a strong player in the comity of nations.

Earlier, Speaker National Assembly Dr. Fehmida Mirza was received by Chairman of the Board of Directors of RCA Ahmed Humaid Al Mazroui and other officials during her visit to the headquarters of the UAE Red Crescent Authority in Abu Dhabi.

During the meeting Dr. Fehmida briefed the UAE Red crescent officials about floods situation in Sindh especially the worst affected districts Badin and Thatta. She appraised the severity of the situation and said that basic foodstuff for adults and children, drinking water, tents, nets, mats and medicines were the urgently required items at the moment. Rehabilitation, including reconstruction of houses, will be undertaken in the second stage.

Dr. Fehmida Mirza highlighted the role played by UAE Red Crescent in earthquake 2005 and 2010 floods and thanked the UAE Red Crescent, Shaikh Khalifa foundation for raising substantial funds for the victims. She also paid rich tributes to the long-standing relationship between the UAE and Pakistan and appreciated the ideal environment that had been created by the visionary leadership of the UAE.

Dr. Fehmida Mirza on behalf of the government and the people of Pakistan also thanked His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and the people of the UAE for their continuous support for Pakistan in times of trial, especially during the natural disasters.

Chairman of the Board of Directors of RCA Ahmed Humaid Al Mazroui assured the speaker full support of UAE Red crescent and said that they have already started work on it. He also directed the Secretary General to immediately visit the affected areas to assess the situation so that RCA carried out relief efforts in the right direction.
