Sikhs stage protests defying curfew in Jammu

Srinagar, June 05, 2015 (PPI-OT):In occupied Kashmir, the members of Sikh community took to streets, today, after defying curfew in Jammu district against the killing of a Sikh youth by Indian police. Groups of Sikhs while shouting ‘Khalistan Zindabad’ slogans blocked the Jammu-Pathakote Highway by burning tyres. The protesters were carrying posters of Sikh religious revolutionary leader, Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale.

The police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed in strength in Jammu city to prevent people from staging the demonstrations. Streets of the city wore a deserted look and business establishments remained closed while mobile and Internet services were suspended. Schools and colleges in several districts of the region remained closed. The protests were also held in Digiana, Poonch, Kathua, Rajouri, Satwari, Ranibagh, Gadigarh and R S Pura areas where people raised slogans against the puppet regime, the BJP and RSS.

The protests had erupted on Thursday after the removal of posters of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. The clashes between the police and the demonstrators had resulted in the killing of a youth, Jagjit Singh, and injuring of dozen others in Indian police’s firing. The Sikhs also held rallies in Srinagar, Baramulla and other areas against the cold-blooded murder of the Sikh youth. The protesters also demanded the arrest of police personnel involved in the killing.
