Senator Raisani Proposes an Asian Peace Council in Tehran
Islamabad: Tehran hosted the International Conference on Dialogue among religions and cultures in Asia from 11 to 12th September, 2011. Pakistan delegation to the event, attended by representative of more than 22 Asian countries, was led by Senator Mir Lashkari Raisani, says a press release received here today from Tehran.
In his statement on the occasion, Senator Raisani stressed that the only way to defuse the growing schism between people and culture is to underscore the commonalities between the different belief systems professed by man. Dispelling the misconceived notion of bracketing Islam with terrorism, Senator Raisani proposed that the conference should issue a strong statement highlighting respect for virtues of pluralism and tolerance.
He further suggested that the conference may establish an “Asian Peace Council”, an apex body formed to crystallize a common Asian response to the various humanitarian challenges confronting the region. The proposal was strongly endorsed by the Conference.
The key note speech at the conference was delivered by the former Speaker of the Iranian Parliaments, Dr. Ghulam Ali Haddad Adel.
