Secretary Education breaks ground for construction of USAID-funded government schools

Sukkur, June 13, 2015 (PPI-OT): Sindh Secretary of Education Dr. Fazlullah Pechuho, today broke ground at the Government (P) Municipal High School located in the Sukkur District, under the Sindh Basic Education Program, to mark the beginning of construction for government schools in Sukkur and Larkana.

The new school buildings will consist of twelve to fourteen classrooms and will be equipped with science and computer laboratories, library, staff room, clinic and a playground with gated boundary walls. Sindh Community Mobilization Program (CMP), cornerstone of USAID Sindh Basic Education Program, facilitated School Management Committees (SMCs) consisting of head teachers, parents and elders to sign the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with construction contractors. The MOU defines the roles and responsibilities of the construction contractors and the SMCs.

The Government of Sindh and U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) are working together to implement the Sindh Basic Education Program (SBEP), to improve the quality and access to basic education for children in Sindh. USAID’s $155 million program is being implemented by the Government of Sindh, along with an additional $10 million contribution.

It is constructing up to 120 state-of-the art schools across 7 districts of northern Sindh including Khairpur, Sukkur, Larkana, Jacobabad, Kashmore, Dadu and Qambar Shahdadkot, along with 5 towns of Karachi including Lyari, Keamari, Orangi, Bin Qasim and Gadap. The construction is already underway in Khairpur, Sukkur, Larkana and Karachi.
