Repair work of protective spurs of canals and rivers made on priority: Shahbaz Sharif

Lahore, July 30 2013 (PPI-OT): Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has said that repair work of protective spurs of canals and rivers should be completed on war footing and all arrangements should be completed for coping with any emergent situation.

He warned that no negligence in the repair and construction work of protective spurs will be tolerated. The Chief Minister ordered Divisional Commissioners to launch crackdown against water thieves disregarding any pressure and big fish involved in water theft be netted.

He said this while getting details from the Divisional Commissioners about the protective measures and possible flood through video conference, here today. During the video conference, commissioners were present in their respective divisions while Irrigation Minister, Senior Member Board of Revenue, Secretaries of Finance and Irrigation Departments and concerned officials were present in the committee room of Civil Secretariat.

Talking to Divisional Commissioners, Shahbaz Sharif said that resources have been provided for the repair of protective spurs and proper utilization of these resources should be ensured at every cost. He said that Provincial Irrigation Minister and Secretary should personally review the construction work.

The Chief Minister said that in view of monsoon, water situation in rivers should be monitored on daily basis and Irrigation Department and administration should work as a team for ensuring availability of water at tails.

He directed that the breach occurred in Kachi Canal should be immediately filled and report presented. He also directed Irrigation Minister and Secretary to formulate a policy guideline for checking illegal construction in riverine areas. Divisional Commissioners informed about the steps taken for coping with any possible flood situation in their respective divisions during video conference.
