Punjab University student earns honour for varsity and Pakistan
Lahore: RedBull came up with an idea of a freestyle drumming competition at university level named RedBull Tum Tum Pa earlier this year. From Pakistan, Chaar Paee band, after a tough contest, was selected for world finals, held on June 11, 2011 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Chaar Paee band comprised Muhammad Usman Altaf of Punjab University College of Art and Design (PUCAD), Talha Jamil of PAC, Ahmed Mubashar of LUMS and Raja Nabeel of LSE. Pakistan team Chaar Paee became world’s 4th best and Asia’s best team despite their one member injured and their stuff rejected. Egypt stood first, Brazil bagged second while Jamaica won third position.
As many as 31 teams from 30 countries including US, Jamaica, India, Greece, Brazil, Oman, UAE, Qatar, Argentina, Australia, and Austria etc participated in the world finals. Each country started surfing for the best teams to represent the country, but it was not so easy for the RedBull and also for the artists because no regular musical instruments were allowed to use. All what had to be done was making a team of 4 members and produce beats with the things you fund in your classrooms, pens, pencils, tables, waste baskets etc. Each team had to perform two compositions, of 60 seconds each, one should be covered of any song they wanted and the second one should be their own composition.
The creativity of Pakistani boys won the hearts of judges as they made a Dhol by joining two baskets from the top and made a drum kit on a box using RedBull cans, stationary holder, paper stacker and a steel geometry box and named it “Arif Gondal,” yet another interesting and catchy name which made them fascinated. Apart from, that the use of voices of teaching of papers, calculators, paper made crackers with rhythm in such a creative made the judges quite impressed.
PU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran has congratulated PUCAD Principal Prof Dr Rahat Naveed Masud, Architecture Department Head Prof Dr Anis A Siddiqi and student Muhammad Usman Altaf on this great achievement and honour for the varsity as well as Pakistan.
