Province to have population policy soon: Shakeel Ahmad

Peshawar, December 16, 2013 (PPI-OT): Special Assistant to Chief Minister for Population Welfare, Shakeel Ahmad has said that the provincial government of PTI has taken bold steps to have own population policy despite critical law and order situation and resource constraints. This, he said, while speaking at a one-day consultative workshop on drafting population policy for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 2013 arranged by the Population Welfare Department at Peshawar on Friday.

Among others present on the occasion were Secretary Population Syed Khalid Hussain Gilani, DG Fazle Nabi, Deputy Director Muhammad Aleem, DPWO Noor Afzal, Dr. Nadia Sher, and Parliamentary Secretary for Population Welfare, Population and development experts, intelligentsia, media and representatives of NGOs and donors community. Shakeel Ahmad said that their government considered managed and stabilized population growth key for social and economic development.

He said that population of KPK was rapidly increasing and accordingly its demographic profile was under quick transition. He said that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa enjoyed the distinction among the sister provinces in Pakistan which had taken the lead in formation of population policy based on explicit requirements of the province.

He said after devolution of ministry of population welfare at federal level in 2010, the provinces were entrusted to manage the affairs of population welfare departments with an aim to bring down the high population growth rate at a manageable level.

Shakeel said that after assuming power, the elected government of KP under the charismatic leadership of visionary leader Imran Khan and determined efforts of Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Pervez Khattak, was addressing this daunting challenge in a holistic manner. The Advisor said everyone of us should fulfil their responsibilities in achieving the objectives of population stabilization as envisioned in the population policy.

He said that the elected PTI government would provide political support at the highest level of the government and would also ensure uninterrupted supply of contraceptives, human and material resources. In this manner, millions of poor, powerless and pregnant women would not only be saved from high mortality and morbidity, he continued. He said that it would also improve the health standards of families and communities at large which would be great service to mankind.
