Prime Minister to visit Neelam-Jehlum Hydro Power Project tomorrow

Islamabad, June 18, 2013 (PPI-OT): Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif is scheduled to visit the site of Neelum-Jehlum hydro Power Project on Wednesday, June 19, 2013. He will also receive a briefing on the project.

Neelum Jehlum Hydro electric Project is a mega project of immense national importance. It is in the vicinity of Muzaffarabad (AJ and K), envisages the diversion of Neelum river water through a tunnel and after producing power, out-falling into Jehlum river. Power House of the project is located in the Chattar Kalass which is 22Kms South of Muzaffarabad.

Installed capacity of the project is 969 MW comprising of four units of 240 MW each.

The original cost of the project was Rs. 130 Billion. The revised PC-1 cost of the project was Rs. 274.882 Billion. The Project cost has escalated due to change in design and machinery requirement owing to the earthquake of 2005.

Timely completion of this project will reduce the gap between demand and supply of power in the country. Moreover, due to its timely and early completion the government of Pakistan can claim water rights of river Neelum.

The newly-elected government of Muhammad Nawaz Sharif is bent upon paying special attention to development of infrastructure projects and the allocation of Rs. 1.1 trillion in Public Sector Project Program (PSDP) in the FY 2013-14 is a clear manifestation of government’s commitment on this count.

With the expected completion of the project in mid 2016, it will be helpful in bridging the electricity shortfall in the country.
