Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif should direct restructuring of Pakistan International Airlines to save it from total destruction: Malik Tahir Javaid

Lahore, June 26, 2013 (PPI-OT): Discourteous, incompetent crew, repeated delays in flight schedules and absence of facilities to the travelers have turned Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) into a white elephant in true sense of the word and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif should direct its restructuring to save it from total destruction.

In a statement issued here, the Chairman Pakistan Industrial and Traders Associations Front (PIAF) Malik Tahir Javaid said that the heavy dependence of the national flag-carrier on government funding and little attention towards to solution of problems of its clients has not only affected its reputation but its performance as well. The PIAF Chairman said that with a small number of fit-to-fly planes, the PIA would not be able to survive for a long if due attention was not given to solve governance issues.

The PIAF Chairman said that the businessmen give preference to fly with the national flag-carrier with a spirit of nationalism but if they would forced to travel in economy class instead of business class for which they had paid for, nobody would be ready to take the flight and would like to use the service of other countries.

He said that Pakistan International Airlines was one of the best companies in the world but today it is being considered the most unreliable service only because of incompetent crew and absence of facilities to the travelers.

He said that unfriendly attitude of the PIA concerned staff was one of the biggest reasons of heavy loss. He said that all over the world, airline companies give honor and respect to their customers but situation is quite different as far as Pakistan International Airline is concerned.

The PIAF Chairman said that the business community had already proposed restructuring of Public Sector Enterprises with an objective to turn them efficient and profit-making institutions that would definitely put off heavy burden from the national exchequer.

He demanded of the government to introduce reforms in the national flag carrier and it would be far better if it is run under public-private partnership.

He urged the need to strictly observe merit and removal of nepotism, corruption and mismanagement. He said that all staff of PIA should be bound to obeyed rules and regulations.

“Reforms in PIA, observation of merit, competent engineers and cooperative staff could reinstate its previous glories as well as increase its income, he concluded.”
