President’s message on World Accreditation Day

Islamabad, June 09, 2012 (PPI-OT): I am pleased to learn that the Pakistan National Accreditation Council (PNAC) is celebrating World Accreditation Day along with other member states of International Accreditation Forum and International Lab Accreditation Cooperation.

On this occasion I wish to congratulate the PNAC for its leading role in raising awareness about the importance of accreditation among all stakeholders and the consumers in the country and also for providing accreditation services to testing and inspection bodies and medical laboratories.

This year’s theme “Accreditation: Supporting safe food and clean drinking water” is of special significance to the developing countries like Pakistan where issues in unsafe drinking water and unhygienic food have been compounded by the lack of awareness about accreditation and inadequacy of accreditation services.

With hundreds of lives lost every year as a result of unhygienic and unsafe food and water borne diseases there is an urgent need to enhance awareness about the need for a multilayered safety management mechanism to ensure availability of safe food and water at affordable price to the people.

Accreditation is critical in evaluating competence and credibility of the entities engaged in the safety management system of food and water. And this holds the key to winning the confidence of the consumers.

It is indeed commendable that PNAC has established its standing by securing Mutual Recognition Arrangements (MRA) to provide accreditation services in accordance with the international standards. Its membership of ILAC, APLAC, IAF and PAC for providing accreditation services is a testimony of its credibility.

I would urge the local entrepreneurs to utilize the internationally recognized accreditation services of PNAC to provide clean drinking water and safe food to the people and also for export.

Launching Halal Food Accreditation services by PNAC is another major initiative which would enable our manufacturers, suppliers and other vendors to take benefit of the tremendous trade potential the exists in area of Halal food.

Once again, I congratulate PNAC for celebrating this day which would help to promote and raise awareness of the value accreditation services among the business community and would further sensitize the Conformity Assessment Bodies (CAB’s) and their client organizations on the importance of accreditation.
