President directs provision of relief to flood affectees

Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari today directed to mobilize all the available resources to provide relief to the flood stricken people in various parts of the country.

In a meeting today about the latest situation and relief efforts made so far for the affectees of current heavy rains in Sindh and other parts of the country, the President directed that all available means at the disposal of federal as well as provincial governments should be utilized and efforts be geared up for providing relief to the flood victims in various areas of the country.

The meeting at Aiwan-e-Sadr which was attended by Dr. Abdul Hafeez Sheikh, Finance Minister, Ms. Hina Rabbani Khar, Foreign Minister, Syed Naveed Qamar, Minister for Water and Power, Mr. M. Salman Faruqui, Secretary General, Chairperson NCHD Ms. Nafisa Shah, Secretaries of Foreign Affairs, EAD and Information division along with Chairman NDMA Mr. Zafar Iqbal Qadir and the Spokesperson to the President Mr. Farhatullah Babar took stock of on-ground situation and deliberated upon strategy for providing assistance and relief to the affected people.

Briefing the media Spokesperson to the President Mr. Farhatullah Babar said that during today’s meeting Chairman NADRA briefed about on-ground situation and the measures taken so far for the calamity hit people including the provision of basic necessities to them. He said that the meeting, then, discussed in detail various available options to cope with the present challenge, he said.

Chairman NDMA informed that huge losses had been caused due to damage to cotton crop particularly in Sindh. Mr. Qadir said that relief assistance was being provided to the affectees.

The NDMA was directed by the President to make a careful needs assessment in coordination with provincial disaster management authorities for undertaking future relief and emergency operations.

The President also directed the concerned divisions to ensure availability of funds and the required logistic support to NDMA and the provincial components of disaster management authorities so that the relief efforts are not hampered due to shortage or unavailability of necessary resources.

The President said that the Government would provide all possible support to the farmers so that they could compensate for their losses to their standing crops.

He said that besides relief and reconstruction aspect, efforts must also be geared up to prevent outbreak of water-borne disease and to educate people for taking necessary preventive measures.

The President also made an appeal to the affluent people and other local Non-Governmental humanitarian organizations to complement Government’s efforts in relief activities.
