President calls for Threading Beads Together to Implement Regional Connectivity Projects

Islamabad: A high level meeting was held in the Presidency today with President Asif Ali Zardari in chair to follow up on the consensus reached in meetings with President of Afghanistan, Russia and Tajikistan at Dushanbe, Tajikistan, as well as with Chinese leadership during visit to Urumqi for the China-Eurasia Expo.

Those who were present during the meeting included Ch. Ahmed Mukhtar, Defence Minister, Ms. Hina Rabbani Khar, Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Asim Hussain, Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources, Syed Naveed Qamar, Federal Minister for Water and Power, Mr. M. Salman Faruqui, Secretary General to the President, Mr. Saleem H. Mandviwala, Chairman BOI, Mr. Yasin Anwar, Governor SBP, Federal Secretaries of concerned divisions and Spokesperson to the President Mr. Farhatullah Babar.

Briefing media Spokesperson to the President Mr. Farhatullah Babar said that at the Quadrilateral Summit in Dushanbe the heads of Afghanistan, Pakistan, Russia and Tajikistan had agreed on enhancing connectivity among the regional states for promotion of trade and other activities, implementation of major regional energy projects including CASA-1000 and TAPI, infrastructure development and jointly fighting the menaces of militancy and drug trafficking. Today’s meeting deliberated upon ways and means to concretize the results of consensual deliberations during the visit.

During meeting the President directed all concerned to take necessary measures for early implementation of important decisions reached at the platform of Quadrilateral Summit and during his one-on-one meetings with various heads of participating countries.

The President said that the pledge made by all the countries to concentrate on enhancing connectivity and early implementation of important projects such as CASA-1000 was a major development with promising prospects for better future of the people of the region.

He said that through better connectivity modes, the concerned parties can not only benefit from each others’ resources but could also promote mutual multifaceted cooperation thorough enhanced human interaction and exchanges. We aim to reduce the existing trade barriers that negatively impact promotion of regional trade and obstruct realization of full trade potential among us, the President remarked during the meeting.

The President welcomed Russian’s interest in CASA-1000 which would not only help to meet our increasing energy requirements but would also promote cooperation and understanding at various important regional and international issues and called for “threading the beads together” to ensure early implementation of these projects.
