Polish delegation apprised about working of Punjab Board of Investment and Trade and its services to investors

Lahore, March 26, 2014 (PPI-OT): A meeting was held with the Polish delegation which comprised of Polish Minister 26, 2014 at 12:00pm. Dr. Ali Naveed Prizada, DG Projects from PBIT chaired the meeting. The delegation was appraised about the working of PBIT and its services to the investors.

Secretary Mines Mr. Arshad Mehmood gave a brief presentation on the working of the department. Mr. Mehmood also informed Polish delegate about coal deposits in the Salt Range, roughly 800 mines are operational. He the stated few shortcomings in the coal mining process namely:

a. Primitive mining techniques

b. Small entrepreneurs

c. Low demand of lignite

Mr.Mehmood then apprised the participants about the bidding procedure for exploring iron ore in the region. The Polish delegates were told that Punjab could have its own steel mill if iron ore is extracted from the Salt Ranges near Chiniot. A 200MW coal-fired power plant was also proposed to power the steel mill.

Polish delegation was requested to provide assistance (both technical and financial) in moving ahead with coal/iron ore mining, and also invest in proposed steel mill. The delegation expressed their concern about security at which they were assured that the provincial government would ensure security. They also requested for coal and ore samples for testing to which the Secretary Mines agreed.

Mr. Pirzada requested the Polish Ambassador to suggest companies which would test and explore the area to estimate the size of coal and iron ore deposits in the region. It was agreed that an MOU would be signed between the governments of Pakistan and Poland if the latter took up the project.
