PDMA Sindh celebrates National Disaster Awareness Day

Karachi, October 08, 2016 (PPI-OT): PDMA Sindh celebrated national Disaster Awareness Day today at DHA Park near Sea View, Karachi. The Day is celebrated in commemorate of Earthquake 2005 victims. The special Assistant to the chief minister Sindh for Zakat and Ushr Department , Dr.Abdul Qayyum Soomro graced the occasion as chief guest and highlighted the importance of awareness towards saving the human lives from different disasters. He stressed on the importance of educating the people for rampant catastrophes like heat waves , droughts and floods. The honourable minister for emphasized on adopting modern / international best practices for mitigation, rescue , relief and rehabilitation . He further viewed that the world must take concrete steps towards reducing the global warming effects , which has brought an existential threat to the survival of mankind on the planet.

The secretary rehabilitation, Mr. Muhammad Rashid , DG PDMA Sindh Commander (Rtd.) Syed Salman Shah , other high officials from Government of Sindh and a number of representatives of civil society, NGOs (PHF, Hands), electronic and print media participated in the event.

The Secretary rehabilitation , Mr. Muhammad Rashid highlighting the importance of the day in his speech said that the government of Sindh is well aware of its responsibilities and is taking all out efforts to deal with the natural as well as human – made disasters.

The DG PDMA Sindh Commander (Rtd. ) Syed Salman Shah highlighting about the damages of recent disasters said that the 8th October is celebrated as National Disasters Awareness Day. He further said that this day not only reminds us of those who lost their lives in the earthquake of 2005 but also unites us to help each other during disasters. He told that PDMA has served as the apex coordinating body during series of recent disasters like cyclone phat 2010 , super floods 2010, cloud burst in 2011 ,excessive rainfall in Jacobabad and adjoining districts in 2012, urban flooding in Karachi -2013 drought in Tharparkar -2014, floods 2015 and as well as heat-wave of 2015. He also appreciated the role of civil society , NGOs and humanitarian organizations.

The participants of the event observed candlelight vigil, and 2 minutes silence in commemoration of the victims of the past disasters at Seaview.
