Pakistan Railways 287 Locomotives Out of Order
Islamabad: Minister for Railways Haji Ghulam Ahmed Bilour on Wednesday told the Senate that 287 Pakistan Railway (PR) locomotives were out of order.
In a written reply to a question during Question Hour, he said that it has been planned to repair all unserviceable locomotives in two years after receipt of material for which procurement action has been initiated.
He said that Pakistan Railways owned a fleet of 494 diesel electric locomotives and 57 locomotives were uneconomical to repair and the same will be replaced on receipt of new locomotives.
Bilour said that the railway track in the country is not as per international fast track classifications and the classifications of track adopted in Pakistan Railways are similar to the normal tracks, which exist in other countries.
He said that Pakistan Railways 7791 km network was laid more than 100 years ago and the financial crisis/resources constraint has resulted in accumulation of deferred track maintenance due to which the track infrastructure is generally unsatisfactory.
He pointed out that due to financial crisis; the budget allocation during the last 10 years had been very meager against the actual requirement for optimum maintenance standard.
He said the financial crisis has affected the track maintenance, which has resulted in increase in the overage track infrastructure.
