Pakistan participation in 48th Bangkok Gems and Jewellery Fair at Bangkok

Islamabad: The 48th Bangkok Gems and Jewellery Fair was held in Bangkok for 14-18 September, 2011. Maintaining the past tradition, Pakistan has participated in the said fair. The fair is a recognized international event and is attended by a large number of Thai and International companies from the gems and jewellery sector. Pakistan has been regularly taking part in the Bangkok Fair for several years now.

This year too, Pakistan established a separate pavilion, where the Pakistan Gems and Jewellery Development Company and several Pakistan traders displayed their products. Information about the precious and semi-precious stones found in Pakistan was provided to the visitors.

The visitors not only admired the fine quality of Pakistan stones but also the craftsmanship and innovative styles of the jewellery products displayed there while more than 50 producers form Pakistan visited the event, three more companies from Pakistan namely Hafiz Gems Stones, Al-Asr Enterprises, and Kellyrees also participated in the Fair.

To underscore the importance attached by Pakistan to the development of this sector, the visiting Minister of State for Production Khawaja Sheeraz Mahmood also visited the Fair. During his stay in Bangkok, the Minister of State met with the president of Gems and Jewellery Association of Thailand Mr. Somchai Phornchindarak. He also undertook separate visits to the Asian Institute of Gemological Sciences (AIGS) as well as Gemopolis Free Zone, where he was extensively briefed on the working of these vibrant entities.

During these meetings, the Minister of State particularly focused on enhancing mutual collaboration between Pakistan and Thailand with regard to exchange of expertise and know-how for the development of Pakistan’s Gems and Jewellery sector.

The Minister directed Pakistan Gems and Jewellery Development Company to ensure large participation in the Bangkok Fair next time in 2012 and also prepare raining plans for the sector which can be shared with Thailand Institutions for technical collaboration. The idea of cooperation between Gemopolis and Pakistan’s proposed “Dazzle Park” was also discussed for future cooperation.
