Pakistan Industrial and Traders Associations Front rejects hike in power tariff

Lahore, March 14, 2014 (PPI-OT): Massive increase in electricity tariff would not only hit industry hard but is bound to give a bad name to the government who is making out all efforts to put economy back on rail.

In a press statement issued here Friday, Chairman PIAF Malik Tahir Javed said that the recent hike in power tariff is bound to jack-up the manufacturing cost of Pakistani merchandise and resultantly the country would become a trading hub.

He said that instead of increasing power tariff, the government should concentrate on cheaper means of power generation including coal-based power generation houses and through furnace oil. He also urged to government to curtail power theft and make the system more efficient.

He suggested to the government to minimize the administrative cost of the power generation. He said that cheap electricity was must to reap full fruit from the opportunity of GSP Plus status but NEPRA was doing quite different.

He said that Kalabagh Dam was a mega project of national interest as it could generate more than 3500 MW cheap electricity. And most importantly it could save the people of particularly Sindh and Balochistan from flood destruction.

He urged the government to start construction of KBD immediately otherwise the days are not too far when they Pakistan would have best irrigation system in the world but not water.
