Pakistan Council for Science and Technology organizes workshop on “Potential of Value Addition and Health Benefits of Indigenous Herbal Wealth and Functional Foods”

Islamabad, June 17, 2015 (PPI-OT):Addressing at the inaugural ceremony of the workshop, organized by Pakistan Council for Science and Technology, Rana Tanveer Hussain, Federal Minister for Science and Technology said that the workshop on herbal wealth and functional food would be helpful in improving economic conditions of the country. Our Government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif has a strong commitment towards economic development of the nation.

The Minister said that they would explore all potential areas which would ensure health and prosperity for our future generation. He further said that the government is well cognizant of the fact and already started working on initiatives such “value addition in Agriculture- the Cluster development Approach.’

Highlighting the importance of the value addition in agriculture sector the Minister said that agriculture in the 21st century is reinventing itself as a new global business reshaped by globalization, standardization, high value production , massive growth in demand , retail and packaging innovations and ramp in up in efficiency. Faced with constant productivity and market pressure, the new agriculture needs new tools to enhance its competitiveness and innovation capacity, he added.

Appreciating the initiative taken by the Pakistan Council for Science and Technology, the minister said that the Potential of value addition and health benefits of Indigenous herbal wealth and Functional Foods is commendable.’ “We have to chalk out a clear strategy so that our indigenous knowledge base is utilized intelligently and efficiently for economic uplift of the country, as the global herbal supplements and remedies market is estimated to reach US $ 115 billion by 2020, whereas functional foods market is expected to reach US$ 305 billion by 2020, he added.

He further said that all this recognition of the herbal and potential functional foods is due to growing adoption of preventive care as safe and effective strategy to improve health and well being of the masses. Tibbe-e- Unani is our national heritage and has survive the test of time is not only a gift of our forefathers but is also our job to explore it maximum potential and also make R and D in this sector, he explored.

Earlier in his welcome address Mr. Anwar-ul-Hassan Gilani, Chairman PCST, welcomed the Chief Guest and the participants. He said that the countries like China has value added their Herbal wealth and explored every possible mean to extract maximum benefit from their herbal wealth and functional foods.

He further said that Pakistan has rich herbal wealth that is being exported on through away prices. It is the need of the time that this sector must be properly channelized and R and D institutes on orienta medicines should be established without further delay. Eminent scientists, researchers, professors, pharmacologists, heads of organizations from Industries/R and D Institutes/Universities have participated in the workshop.
