Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran agree to strengthen trilateral cooperation


Islamabad: A Trilateral meeting of Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan was held here at Tehran today which was attended by Iranian President Dr. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Afghan President Hamid Karzai and Pakistan’s President Mr. Asif Ali Zardari along with their respective delegations.

President Asif Ali Zardari during the meeting called upon a joint strategy and efforts to curb militancy and terrorism. He said that regional approach to the issue was the only way to address the growing challenge of extremism and militancy which he said was a common enemy of the three countries and the world also. He said that the war against militancy was a long drawn battle and therefore long term measures and joint efforts were required to eliminate this menace.

The President while lauding Iran’s constructive engagement in the trilateral process thanked President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for hosting the Trilateral Summit and offered to host the next trilateral summit in Pakistan.

From Pakistan side the meeting was attended among others by Interior minister, Senator Rehman Malik, Petroleum Minister, Dr. Asim Hussain, Pakistan’s ambassador in Iran and spokesperson to the President Mr. Farhatullah Babar were present.
