No Respite in the Month Long Collective bargaining Attacks and Sabotage


Karachi: The Karachi Electric Supply Company continued to repair local faults against continuing attacks by miscreants at its offices, employees, assets and network for about one month now. At Fleet Management head offices, miscreants stopped employees from entering into the office. The miscreants also forced into the offices of Management officers and threatened and harassed them out. At the Civic Centre head offices of Energy Conservation and Revenue Protection Department, the miscreants blocked entry and locked the stair entrance.

At about 1:30pm on Tuesday, 5-10 masked men came to the KESC Defence IBC in phase II Extension and started abusing the security guard to open the gate. When the guard stood his ground and not finding any headway, the attackers threw stones which caused damaged to the glass of main gate before running away.

On May 30, the miscreants burnt a street light maintenance vehicle belonging to Cantonment Board Clifton near DHA-II. The Board officers lodged an FIR over this incident against KESC CBA Union’s office-bearers. And in the same vicinity of Akhtar Colony at about 10:30om about 50 to 60 CBA workers on 30 to 35 MC with covered faces wanted to burn KESC Trucks parked outside the centre. Luckily the rangers mobile deployed on site for security patrolling observed activity of these miscreants and opened fire in the air, immediately the CBA workers ran away.

The miscreants damaged and disabled eight sub-stations. At KCHS, sub-station “G”, at PECHS sub-station “P”, at KDA Scheme No. 1, five sub-stations, No. 1, 2, 1-A, Al-Hamra and Oakwood, and Kamal Park sub-station were rendered out of function. Oil was drained out, high tension bushing damaged and bush bars were stolen. Mr. Inam, supervisor operations of KESC’s Shah Faisal offices was intercepted and beaten up severely by the miscreants while attending to the tripping of Community Hall feeder.

On May 29, a group of miscreants attacked a KESC maintenance team working for restoration of supply to Alshamis Apartments Garden West. The attackers manhandled and insulted the team members and forced them to stop the repair work.

The miscreants also burnt out four high tension linking cables in Garden-I sub-station in Saddar Area. Electronics market at Abdullah Haroon Road, Rangers’ Residence and other places linked with the sub-station were affected. In Clifton, the miscreants stole 4 span conductor wires and put off breakers affecting power supply to Block Nos. 2, 5 and 8.

The KESC believes that the sabotage and attacks are quite detrimental to the smooth power supply as well as the City’s life.
