National Disaster Management exhibition held at University of Peshawar

Islamabad, December 04, 2014 (PPI-OT): To provide a common platform to all stakeholders working in the field of Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), the Centre for Disaster Preparedness and Management (CDPM), University of Peshawar (UoP) every year organize a National Disaster Management Exhibition at the University of Peshawar.

Continuing the same tradition the CDPM organized a two day Disaster Management Exhibition (DME-2014) on December 03-04, 2014 at the University of Peshawar in collaboration with United Nations World Food Programme-Pakistan and Alkhidmat Foundation-KP.

A total of 52 organization of international repute displayed their products, equipments, books, periodicals, research, pamphlets, models, case studies, software and services to the students and general public. The main objective of this two day Disaster Management Exhibition was to promote awareness and sensitize the public in general and students of the UoPand other related institutions of KP in particular.

The Chairman National Disaster Management (NDMA) Maj. Gen. Muhammad Saeed Aleem Inaugurated the exhibition. He was accompanied by the Guest of Honour, Deputy Country Director World Food Programme-Pakistan Mr. Peter Scott Bowden and Prof. Dr. Amir Nawaz Khan of UoP.

In his welcome speech the Director, Centre for Disaster Preparedness and Management, University of Peshawar, Mr. Mushtaq Ahmad Jan informed that CDPM is the first ever centre of its kind providing disaster management education in the Public sector across Pakistan.

This Centre has initiated the country’s first ever M.Sc., BS (4 years), MS and M.Phil Leading to PhD and One Year Postgraduate Diploma programs in the Disaster Management discipline. Besides, the CDPM is regularly organizing workshops, exhibitions, conferences and seminars to create awareness and train the relevant stakeholders on Disaster Management.

Speaking at the occasion Chairman NDMA congratulated the CDPM team for organizing such a large scale event for public awareness and disaster risk communication. He was of the view that holding such type of mass awareness activities reflects great sense of responsibility on part of CDPM for promoting the cause of disaster risk reduction in Pakistan.

He further stressed that this is the right time for academia and disaster management practitioners to demonstrate similar commitment and exploit their respective scientific knowledge and experience for promoting importance of disaster risk reduction for nation’s resilience building.

The Guest of Honor Mr. Peter Scott Bowden in his speech assured that the World Food Programme Pakistan will continue their support in organizing such events in future. He also offered that World Food Programme would be willing to support CDPM students in field visits to their project sites.
