National Disaster Management Authority and partners join hands to mark International Women’s Day at Lok Virsa Festival- March 8-12, 2012

Islamabad: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in collaboration with National Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Network (NHEPRN), and other organizations, UN Women, UNICEF, Save the Children, UNDP, WHO, FAO and academia (International Islamic University, Shifa Medical College, Idara-e-Taleem-o-Agahi, and Faroughe Saher) as well as Family Planning Association of Pakistan marked the International Women’s Day by participating in a five days’ festival at the Lok Virsa Islamabad here today. The main purpose of the event is to highlight the efforts and achievements on livelihood, health, and media reporting during disasters from the gender perspective.

The festival was inaugurated by the Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan. The Minister in her address to the participants at the inaugural ceremony stressed the need for changing society’s mindset to overcome challenges faced by the women. She also visited stalls where different items produced by women were put on display.

An array of activities have been organized by NDMA in cooperation with the above-mentioned partners to reflect upon the needs and issues related to women, young girls, children and other vulnerable groups during the disasters in Pakistan.

These activities include a display of informational material, documentaries, and demonstrations on how to deal with disasters as well as awareness sessions on health and hygiene during disasters. A number of competitions are also being convened on disaster related topics through creative activities e.g. poster, painting, and debate competitions. Musical performances on folk and sufi themes will also be performed by young and emerging singers.
