Mirwaiz placed under house arrest, seminar sabotaged

Srinagar, December 10, 2014 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, the authorities put the All Parties Hurriyet Conference Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq under house arrest to prevent him from participating in the activities scheduled to be held in connection with the World Human Rights Day in the territory, today.

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq in a statement issued in Srinagar said that manifestation of dictatorial tactics in the name of democracy and usurpation of people’s rights by the dint of gun by the so-called champions of democracy should serve as an eye-opener for the world human rights organizations.

The Mirwaiz denounced the sabotage of seminar, which was to be organized by the APHC on the World Human Rights Day, today, and placing restrictions on raising voice against the ongoing rights abuses in the territory. He said that the rights day was being observed the world over with true spirit of democracy, but the situation in Kashmir was totally different.

On the other hand, a peaceful protest demonstration, led by senior APHC leader Maulana Abbas Ansari was held in Srinagar after the authorities did not allow the Hurriyet to hold the scheduled seminar. Other Hurriyet leaders including Muhammad Musaddiq Aadil, Ghulam Nabi Zaki, Advocate Shahid-ul-Islam, Syed Saleem Gilani, Javed Ahmad Mir, Abdur Rasheed Untoo, Ghulam Hassan Mir and others participated in the protest.An annual report on the human rights scenario in Kashmir was also released on the occasion.

Meanwhile, an APHC spokesman in a statement denounced the house arrest of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and arrest of Hakeem Abdur Rasheed by Indian police. Hakeem Abdul Rasheed was shifted to Central Jail, Srinagar.
