Minister of State Baleegh Ur Rehman attends laptop distribution ceremony

Islamabad, April 07, 2015 (PPI-OT): Minister of State Baleegh Ur Rehman attended a laptop distribution ceremony (PM National Laptop Scheme) as a Chief Guest today at AIOU. Minister of State Baleegh Ur Rehman congratulated the high achievers who were being awarded with the laptops due to their hard work. He said that the Prime Minister’s laptop scheme is one of the initiatives to help and support the educators and learners.

Distribution of laptops among the bright students studying in any public sector higher education institutes across the country is one millstone of our long-term vision of brighter and stronger future of Pakistan, stated the State Minister. He also congratulated the Chairman HEC Dr. Mukhtar in distributing the laptops among the brilliant students successfully and with transparency. Minister of State mentioned that Transparency International has admired this scheme and improved Pakistan’s ranking in reducing corruption in the country as well.

Rapidly changing world scenario demands the use of Information Technology but unfortunately there was a digital divide in our country despite knowing the importance of Information Technology, lamented the minister. So our government has started this scheme in order to reduce this gap and facilitate the students, 1 lakh laptops are distributed every year in the country.

And it has not only been helping the students but also the laptops’ manufacturing companies who have decided to manufacture these laptops in Pakistan. Moreover our electronic industry is also flourishing due to this scheme which is commendable. Invest in your best assets and you would get the best results, students are our best assets and we are not only educating them but trying to equip them with best of the digital facilities as well, emphasized the Minister.

He admired the efforts of HEC and specially its chairman on being carrying out so many good projects of education. He said Pakistan dropout rate has been reduced to 61 lakhs from 67 lakhs, literacy rate increased to 60% from 58%, enrolment rate increased to 72% from 68 % during our tenure.

Minister of State said that AIOU has been one of the top priorities of the Government to provide all required facilities to the students so that they could devote themselves fully to education and became proud Pakistanis, said the State Minister.

This University stands out as I can see a variety of age groups coming from all parts of the country and studying in multiple disciplines. The talented and educated generations are the future of our nation and our government is spending a huge amount on the welfare projects for the youth to enable them meet the challenges of future.

Minister of state said that it is essential that we now reposition universities as the institutions to influence the direction and quality of our research and ensure that they become the elite institutions that they were intended to be. We should be striving towards a research community, which is defined by increased global connectedness and networks with international research peers.

This university has a great potential and now I want it to excel in Massive Online Education System as well like distance learning, stressed the minister. I undoubtedly believe that under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Shahid Siddiqui, this university is going towards a better tomorrow.

Talking about other issues he said that under the honourable leadership of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif we are not only able to reduce energy crisis but many other things including circular debt etc. And by the grace of Allah we will become an energy sustainable country by the end of 2018. Further the minister added that according to Moody International economic indicators in Pakistan are improving and it has put Pakistan from stable to positive countries’ list.
