Minister for Science and Technology visits Pakistan Science Foundation

Islamabad, July 06, 2013 (PPI-OT): The Government is committed to promotion of Science and Technology (S and T) activities in the country for socio-economic development in the country, as it is one of the main parts of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) manifesto, said Federal Minister for S and T Mr. Zahid Hamid on Friday.

The Minister expressed these views during his visit to Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF) for briefing on the performance of the Foundation. PSF Chairman Prof. Dr. Manzoor H. Soomro gave a presentation on statutory functions, structure and achievements of PSF and its subsidiary organizations Pakistan Museum of Natural History (PMNH) and Pakistan Scientific and Technological Information Centre (PASTIC)

S and T Secretary Mr. Akhlaq Ahmad Tarar and senior officers of the S and T Ministry were also present on this occasion

The Minister assured his full support to PSF programmes aimed at boosting R and D activities in the country. He appreciated various programmes of the Foundation to popularize S and T in the country, especially the Research Support, R and D Industry, Invention and Innovation, Natural Sciences Linkages, Inquiry Based Science Education, Science Caravans and national and international collaborative programmes etc. The Minister also commended different ideas of PSF to popularize S and T activities.

He called for the need to upgrade PSF Science Caravans in accordance with the modern needs so that students and people of the rural areas may be introduced with the latest developments in science through information technology facilities such as internet etc. Mr. Zahid Hamid was of the view that science museums should be established in all the provinces to generate students’ interest in the S and T.

The S and T Minister directed the PSF authorities to fund applied sciences research projects to trigger the trickle effect of the research to the end users. He said the Foundation should discourage funding to those research projects which after completion go to the shelf and result in no socio-economic impact in the society. He said while selecting the research projects there is need to re-align with private sector to know its research and development needs.

The minister commended PSF collaboration with Intel Pakistan, UNESCO and European Union etc to promote S and T activities. He stressed for enhancing this collaboration with multi-national organizations for research projects and activities funding.
