Minister chairs meeting on Pensioners’ Health Insurance Issues and Performance of Employees’ old-age benefits institution

Islamabad, June 11, 2012 (PPI-OT): A meeting on Pensioners’ Health Insurance related issues and the performance of EOBI and BoE was held here today. Chaudhry Wajahat Hussain, Federal Minister for Human Resource Development chaired the meeting. Mr. Zafar Iqbal Gondal, Chairman EOBI, Mr. Habib ur Rehman Khan, DG Bureau of Emigration and Overseas Employment, Ch. Ayub, Joint Secretary and Mr. Sohail Ahmed, CEO Sahara Life Insurance Company were also present on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion, the Minister urged the Employees’ Old-Age Benefits Institution (EOBI) to extend maximum possible assistance to the pensioners. He further said, “EOBI should expedite its efforts to provide fully facilitated benefits to the poor, deserving industrial and commercial workers as envisaged in the EOB act 1976”. Inquiring about the issues faced by pensioners relating to their Health Insurance, the Minister directed the concerned officials to provide better services to the registered workers.

Minister HRD appreciated the working of EOBI and advised the officers to put the best of their efforts to serve the working community and pensioners to whom the EOB Fund belongs. Chairman EOBI informed the Minister that Sahara Insurance Company Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of EOBI, was ready to be launched and would facilitate Pakistani migrants abroad to a greater extent and also provide health insurance assistance to in country workers after their retirement. The Minister directed that this must be fast tracked.

While appreciating the initiative taken by EOBI and other stake holders, The Minister further added, “The automation of EOBI functioning which includes registration of employers, collection of contribution, disbursement of pension and investment of funds has started yielding results; it has helped reduce corruption by minimizing human interaction”.

Chairman EOBI Zafar Iqbal Gondal briefed the Minister on the objectives and performance of EOBI. He informed that during the tenure of the present Government, EOBI benefits package for its registered employees has been improved and currently it is paying Rs. 830 million every month to over 300,000 pensioners. Chairman also briefed the minister on the EOBI Investments and its future projects, including IT solution, and Human Resource of EOBI.
