MICROSOFT RESEARCH (REDMOND), Research and Development arm of Microsoft Corporation accepts proposal for award of research grant for development of SoftUPS

Islamabad, June 13, 2013 (PPI-OT): MICROSOFT RESEARCH (REDMOND), the Research and Development arm of global software leader, Microsoft Corporation USA, has accepted the proposal for award of a research grant for the development of “SoftUPS” submitted by Dr.Affan Syed, Assistant Professor at National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences (NU-FAST), Islamabad.

A news release issued by Ministry of IT and Telecom today said that the National ICT R and D Fund, an organization of the Ministry of Information Technology, had extended the initial support to Dr. Affan’s research activities by providing his lab with a stable platform.

Dr. Affan applied for Microsoft Research grant regarding SoftUPS Solution. He has been awarded grant for the said project. The solution aims to build a smart home application that replaces current UPS based solutions to load-shedding with a more ICT- inspired, greener, lower cost and efficient solution, hence, the name SoftUPS. The research shall now start from 1st July, 2013.

Dr. Affan was grateful to the National ICT R and D Fund for providing support for setting up the Research Lab. Moreover, since its establishment in 2005, the National ICT R and D Fund has funded 86 R and D projects, out of which 10 have won National and International awards, 4 patents have been filed and 189 publications have been made by various academia, researchers and industry organizations.
