Message of Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani prime minister of Pakistan on occasion of world aids day

Islamabad: Pakistan joins the international community in observing the World AIDS Day 2011, which is the 23rd such commemoration since its launch by the World Health Organization in 1988. The Day aims to raise awareness about the HIV and AIDS threat faced globally.

It further highlights achievements and progress made over the past year and identifies the future course of action that can help eliminate this disease. The focus on prevention and treatment of HIV and AIDS related conditions is a key in decreasing the incidence of the deadly disease.

World AIDS Day is an ideal occasion to raise general awareness about this important Health issue. We have to keep reminding people that HIV can be prevented and, if infected, Anti Retro Virals (ARVs) are provided by the Government of Pakistan free of charge at service delivery points.

Pakistan is also a signatory to Millennium Development Goals (MDG) whereby the government and its partners are committed “to halt and begin to reserve the spread of the disease by 2015”. The theme “Join me, because the fight against HIV and AIDS begins with you” needs to be emphasized aimed at sensitizing the individuals to the need of concerted efforts.

The Government of Pakistan is committed to eradicating this disease. We thank all the donors, the UN System, International Non-Government Organizations, Global Fund for AIDS, TB and Malaria in fighting against this disease on professional as well as voluntary basis. As we observe World AIDS Day, I appeal all Pakistanis to play their role in preventing this disease from spreading.
