Memorandums of understanding signed between Port Qasim Authority, Karachi Port Trust, Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, Karachi Water Sewerage Board and UK firm

Islamabad, July 11, 2012 (PPI-OT): Dr. Ishrat-ul-Ebad Khan, Governor of Sindh is visiting Scotland. The purpose of the visit is to capitalise on the existing socioeconomic and cultural linkages between Pakistan and Scotland and explore avenues of cooperation in the areas of Higher Education and attract Foreign Investment in Energy Sector and Water Desalination and Waste management for Karachi.

Later in the day on Tuesday,10th July, at a Civic Reception at Glasgow City Council four Memorandums of Understanding were signed between Port Qasim Authority (PQA), Karachi Port Trust (KPT), Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KW and SB) and Cook Consulting (UK) Limited and its international partners.

The MoUs were signed in the presence of Dr. Ishrat-ul Ebad Khan, Governor of Sindh, Senator Babar Khan Ghauri, Federal Minister for Ports and Shipping, Pir Mazhar-ul Haq, Senior Minister for Education, H.E. Mr. Wajid Shamsul Hasan, High Commissioner for Pakistan and H.E. Mr. Adam Thomson, High Commissioner for UK in Pakistan. The details of MoUs are as following:

Memorandum of Understanding between Port Qasim Authority and Cook Consulting (UK) Limited, Sentinel Waste International Limited Canada and Aeromix Systems Inc. United States of America for provision of freshwater to the population of Karachi. The project envisages delivery of 97 million gallons per day of drinking water with an estimated Foreign Investment of $775 million USD.

Memorandum of Understanding between Karachi Port Trust and Cook Consulting (UK) Limited and Point Green Limited to provide wastewater treatment. The project envisages treatment of 60 million imperial gallons per day of wastewater at an estimated Foreign Investment of $100 million USD.

Memorandum of Understanding to provide a comprehensive waste management study to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation over the next 4 months.

Memorandum of Understanding between Karachi Water and Sewerage Board and Cook Consulting (UK) Limited partnered with Sentinel Waste International Limited Canada and Aeromix Systems Inc, the United States of America to provide freshwater to the population of Karachi. This project envisages output of 12.5 million imperial gallons per day of drinking water, with an estimated Foreign Investment of $85 million USD.

Later in the day, Governor of Sindh met with Professor. Walter Johnstone, Dean (International) of the University of Strathclyde. The Governor in his interaction with the faculty apprised them of the importance the Government attaches to the promotion of Science and Technology in Pakistan and in particular the province of Sindh.

Two Memorandums of Understanding were signed seeking collaboration in areas of Engineering and Technology between Strathclyde University and NED University of Engineering and Technology Karachi and Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, Jamshoro. The MoUs will further promote and encourage bilateral faculty and student exchanges and would open new avenues of research cooperation.

Governor Sindh is accompanied by Pir Mazhar-ul-Haq, Senior Minister for Education, representing Chief Minister of Sindh and Senator Babar Khan Ghauri, Federal Minister for Ports and Shipping. The other provincial Ministers who are part of the delegation are Mr. Raza Haroon, Minister for Information Technology, Mr. Faisal Sabzwari, Minister for Youth Affairs, Mr. Sagheer Ahmed, Minister for Health, Mr. Adil Siddiqui, Minister for Public Health Engineering and senior civil servants.
