Meeting of National Food Security and Research body to be held on January 7

Islamabad, January 05, 2013 (PPI-OT): 6th Meeting of the Standing Committee on National Food Security and Research is going to be held on 7th January to discuss the current scenario of Live Stock Department, PARC Research activities in Punjab as well as the Private Member Bill on “The Pakistan Food Security for Poor People”. Mir Israrullah Zehri being The Honorable Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research is an ex-officio member of the said committee.

Two of the major initiatives of the Ministry of National Food Security and Research shall be brought under discussion, namely National Zero Hunger Programme, and a proposal for setting up of a National Food Security Council representing federal, provincial and local level governments.

The Standing Committee on National Food Security and Research shall also undertake the performance of Live Stock in the context of devolution of the animal health and production chapters to the provinces, consequent upon the 18th Constitutional Amendment. Livestock sector’s prospective role towards rural economic development can be gauged from the fact that nearly 8 million families are involved in livestock raising, deriving more than 35% income from livestock production activities.

Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) is mandated to undertake, aide, promote and coordinate agricultural research. It is continuously engaged in arranging the expeditious utilization of the research results as well as in formation of research establishments, mainly to fill in the gaps in existing programs of agricultural research.
