Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Pakistan Institute of Development Economics to organise seminar to indentify barriers to exports

Lahore, July 06, 2012 (PPI-OT): In order to break down the barriers to Pakistan’s exports and to give them a boost, the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) and Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE) are jointly holding a seminar on July 7 (Saturday) at the LCCI to share the findings of a joint study conducted by the two organizations.

The Seminar would addressed by experts belonging to public, private sectors and academia including LCCI Vice President Saeeda Nazar and Vice Chancellor PIDE Dr Rashid Amjad, Executive Secretary National Trade and Transport and Facilitation Committee Safdar Sohail and Director General trade Policy ministry of Commerce Safdar Sohail.

At the seminar, the representatives of private sector will not only be suggested solutions to mitigate the adverse effects of those factors which are in their control but some urgent steps will also be proposed to the government to facilitate the exporting firms.

Though Pakistan’s exports have grown in the recent period but the picture is not as rosy as implied by Pakistan Economic Survey 2011-12 because the exporting firms continue to suffer from various weaknesses. Poor export performance during 2008-09 and 2009-10 contributed to a great deal in bringing sudden jump in growth of export in 2010-11. It has proved to be a temporary phenomenon, hence might not be sustainable.

This LCCI-PIDE study aims to explore present problems faced by the Pakistani exporting firms. The main objective was to evaluate exporters’ problems faced in exploiting their full potential. In addition, the study aims to suggest policies that might be required to ensure that our exporters take full advantage of increased market access brought about by new trading environment.

The dedicated team of LCCI duly supported by a group of university students gathered data from relevant companies on the extensive questionnaires prepared by PIDE. The collected data helped determine the serious weaknesses in logistic support, transportation facilities, manufacturing activities as well as policy issues. Special focus was given on the perception of manufacturers about causes of weaknesses and how much, in their opinion, these causes are influencing their export performance.

Major obstacles faced by exporters like lack of trained labor, financial inputs, energy, physical infrastructure, bureaucratic hurdles, institutional rigidities and etc were categorized. The objective was to combine research with active private sector participation and search solutions with concerned agencies in real time.
