Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Minister for Information and Health directs Health Regulatory Authority to initiate crackdown against quacks

Peshawar, July 07, 2013 (PPI-OT): The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Minister for Information and Health Shaukat Ali Yousafzai has strictly directed the Health Regulatory Authority (HRA) to initiate crackdown against quacks and spurious drugs in the market and take strict action against those involved in the business of substandard medicines and providing medical cover to the people without having the required knowledge and expertise.

These directives were issued by the minister health and information during a briefing by the Health Regulatory Authority in Peshawar on Friday. Chairman of HRA Muzaffar Khan briefed the minister on the administrative structure, duties, targets and achievements as well as problems so far facing in the disposal of duties by the employees of the HRA. He also gave suggestions for streamlining the HRA.

The minister health said that the PTI government was sincere in decentralization of power and introducing reforms in all the sectors especially health and education. He said for this purpose in both the sectors working groups of experts had been set up which would finalize their recommendations and a solid report by July 25.

Referring to the health sector the minister said he had accepted the health sector as a challenge and had pledged to make the sector according to the expectations of the people. He said the development grant of the health sector had been raised to Rs. 8 billion as compared to Rs. 7 billion last year and added that the funds would be increased manifold when necessary.

He said the role of the HRA could not be ruled out in the provision of standard medical facilities to the people and that was why it had been decided that the HRA would be converted into an effective and powerful institution. He said besides raise in the HRA funds manpower would also increased in the HRA and if needed necessary legislation would also be done in this connection.

The provincial minister said in the prevention of the sale of substandard and spurious drugs the drug inspectors were also playing a major role and the government was increasing the number of drug inspectors on emergency basis.

He said except Peshawar new posts of drug inspectors would be created in all the districts. He called upon the HRA officers to prepare a solid and viable strategy for increasing the resources of the HRA and work honestly for the provision of standard medical facilities to the patients.
