Karachi Port Trust commemorates World Environment Day

Karachi, June 05, 2012 (PPI-OT): Karachi Port Trust commemorates World Environment Day with a zeal for better environment for all. The port has always considered environment protection, safety and security on top priority in all its projects. KPT possesses the 1000 ha of mangrove forest in its jurisdiction which is spread along the eastern and western backwaters.

Two species of mangroves Avicenna marina and Rhizophora mucronta can be found the former one is common in the jungle and the later one has been diminished due to various reasons. KPT is putting hard to restore this mangrove species. Mangrove nursery having more than 3000 saplings has been established at the Marine Pollution Control Department of KPT. Other forestry techniques are also applied to restock the diminished areas.

The mangroves are ever green trees and there saplings can be found from June to August. KPT starts its plantation every year from June by linking it with the World Environment Day. General Manger Operations KPT Mr. Azhar Hayat inaugurated the plantation of this year on 5th June 2012 at Beach Luxury Hotel with the participation of the local school children.

The theme of the activity is Mangroves for the Better Environment. Children also presented a tableau in front of esteemed gathering giving the message for cleaner and better environment. More than 500 saplings of mangroves are planted by the school kids at China creek. The participants from the oil companies, No’s government organizations and civil society members witnessed the occasion.
