Karachi Metropolitan Corporation takes control of 291 bus shelters

Karachi, August 16, 2015 (PPI-OT): Karachi Metropolitan Corporation has taken control of 291 bus shelters which had been constructed alongside major roads in the city. More than 20 tuck shops established in these bus shelters were also been sealed by KMC. This action has been taken in view of the violation of the agreement by the firms which had constructed these shelters under an accord with the defunct City Government Karachi.

The said firms had not maintained these bus shelters and failed to pay around Rs500million dues to KMC. Administrator Karachi Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui said KMC will now work out new policy for these bus shelters and tuck shops and recover all dues from these firms. He said the bus shelters will be made beautiful and these could be given under some new agreement or through open auction to get revenue for KMC.

According to details Administrator Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui was informed in a meeting that the project of setting up of bus shelters and tuck shop with the coordination of private sector was initiated in 2004 which was aimed at providing bus shelter to the passengers on all major corridors.

Three firms took part in this project but neither they according to the agreement arranged for maintenance of these shelters nor paid the dues to the KMC and instead run these bus shelters on commercial basis and made millions of rupees in this way. KMC now took control of these 291 bus shelters from Sunday and sealed the tuck shops after removing the advertisement boards.
