Karachi Metropolitan Corporation Administrator chairs meeting on cleanliness

Karachi, July 12, 2013 (PPI-OT): KMC Administrator Syed Hashim Raza Zaidi has directed Municipal Services Department and municipal administrations of five districts that in light of directions of Chief Secretary Sindh garbage should be cleaned from all 60 feet and above roads till 20th of this month. Garbage should not be seen on roads after 20th July whereas arrangements for cleanliness on roadsides, bridges and parks should be made so that city could look clean. He said this while chairing a meeting held on cleanliness condition in the city.

The meeting was attended by Metropolitan Commissioner Matanat Ali Khan, Sr. Director Municipal Services Masood Alam, Director General Technical Services Niaz Soomro, Municipal Commissioner East Ashfaq Mallah, Municipal Commissioner West Qamar Shaikh, Municipal Commissioner South Muhammad Raeesi, Municipal Commissioner Central Afaq Saeed, Talat Mehmood from District Municipal Corporation Malir, Director Machinery Pool Noman Arshad and other officers.

The representatives of Five DMCs informed KMC Administrator about difficulties being faced in administrative and financial matters and requested that in view of current financial crunch Government of Sindh should be asked for providing special grant so that along with payment of due salaries of the employees payment of dues in respect of purchase of petrol and diesel could be made. District Municipal representatives said that if these problems were resolved cleanliness works could be improved in the city.

They informed that employees’ salaries for the month of may have been paid whereas payment of June salaries was remaining. They said that Deputy Commissioner has no administrative powers after taking district administrator charge from him whereas due to non-payment supply of petrol and diesel for garbage lifter vehicles has been stopped due to which difficulties were being faced in cleanliness works.

It was also informed in meeting that dues of Rs7 Crore in respect of petrol and diesel purchase were on district central, Rs3 Crore 45 Lac on district west, Rs5 Crore 25 Lac on district Malir, Rs6 Crore 95 Lac on district south, Rs6 Crore on district east. Besides payment to garbage contractors has not been paid since January and 9 Crore has to be paid and dues of 2 Crore 27 Lac of Lyari Zone from April to June whereas 4 Crore 68 Lac of remaining zones from January to June have to be paid.

KMC Administrator Syed Hashim Raza Zaidi on this occasion said that despite of financial problems and limited resources cleanliness of the city was responsibility of municipal departments therefore Municipal Services Department with the collaboration of five DMCs should prepare a comprehensive and effective strategy and in this connection vehicles, machinery and other equipment should be provided to concerned DMC on requirement so that hindrance in lifting and taking garbage to landfill site in any district could be removed and we all could utilize available resources for proper cleanliness of the city.

He said that in view of upcoming monsoon it was very important to ensure timely disposal of garbage. Proper cleanliness could curb viral diseases during rains and citizens be provided with clean and fresh environment.
