International Institute of Strategic Studies delegation calls on Foreign Secretary

Islamabad: A five-member delegation of the International Institute of Strategic Studies (IISS), London, led by Mr. Adam Ward, Director Studies, called on Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir today. They exchanged views on issues affecting Pakistan, the South Asian region and the world at large.

2. The Foreign Secretary stated that the world was changing at a very fast pace, creating ever more and newer challenges and opportunities. Pakistan was also transforming significantly. Democracy, pluralism, the rapidly growing civil society, women’s empowerment, free media and independent judiciary were all adding to Pakistan’s strengths.

In the last three years, Pakistan had realigned its foreign policy to peace and development agenda of Pakistan. Accordingly, the democratic government of Pakistan had been focusing on reviving the economy through bold structural decisions and by promoting regional economic cooperation.

He emphasized that the people of Pakistan, who had been showing remarkable resilience in the ongoing fight against terrorism and natural calamities, were determined to continue Pakistan’s march towards peace and prosperity.

3. Foreign Secretary Bashir also briefed the IISS delegation on the regional situation including the upcoming International Conference on Afghanistan in Bonn on 5 December, and Pakistan-India relations in the context of the resumed dialogue process.

4. Earlier, the third round of dialogue was held between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the IISS. From the Pakistan side, the dialogue was led by Additional Foreign Secretary Abdul Basit. Discussions were held on counterterrorism, Pakistan-India relations, Afghanistan and Disarmament and non-proliferation led by Additional Foreign Secretaries Alamgir Babar, Munawar Saeed Bhatti and Sajjad Kamran.

5. The MOFA-IISS Dialogue process was initiated in 2007. The first and second rounds were held in London and Islamabad, respectively. The next round will be held in London in the second half of 2012.
