Interior Minister briefed about Federal Investigation Agency, National Database Registration Authority

Islamabad, July 06, 2013 (PPI-OT): Federal Minister for Interior and Narcotics Control, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan chaired separate meetings to review the performance and functions of FIA and NADRA here today.

The Minister said the government wants to revamp FIA by removing all controversial officials and bringing in those with integrity and clean track record. He said an effective system of reward and punishment would be put in place to boost the morale of law enforcement personnel.

He said revamping would also be done in the rules of FIA to give it more powers against corrupt officers.

The Minister directed that a procedure should be adopted to ensure merit-based selection and induction procedure to ensure better functioning of FIA. A committee would soon be constituted for this purpose.

He said in matters of transfers and postings within the Ministry of Interior and its attached departments no political interference will be tolerated.

Regarding hiring of special public prosecutors the Minister observed that their services should be hired in a completely transparent manner and payments made to them should commensurate with their qualification.

DG FIA briefed the Minister about the performance of FIA and informed that the authority has five zones within the country which include four provinces and the federal Capital. He said that FIA has 52 police stations all over the country but due to shortage of staff only 36 of these stations are functional.

The Minister directed that Anti -money laundering units be established in all parts of the country to check money laundering and hundi. He laid stress on making FIA a body in which people have trust and confidence and said that all complainants should be treated with respect by FIA officials.

Secretary Interior Ch. Qamar uz Zaman, DG FIA Saud Mirza, DG National Crisis Management Cell, Tariq Lodhi and other senior officers of the Ministry attended the meeting.

Later Chairman NADRA, Tariq Malik, briefed the Minister about the working of his organization. He informed the Minister that so far NADRA has finished biometric registration of 96% adult men and 86% women in Pakistan.

The Minister asked Chairman NADRA to take steps to prepare a system of electronic voting by the time of next general elections.

Chairman NADRA informed the Minister that NADRA is also helping various other departments like Zakat and Baitul Maal. He said that work on Geographical Information System has recently been started in Islamabad and data is being collected at a rapid pace.

He said that under the directions of the Minister, work has also been started on introducing e-tag system at the five selected entry and exit points in Islamabad. The Minister directed for speeding up of the installation of this system.

The Minister was informed that NADRA has started the registration of domestic servants in Islamabad and so far 5000 have been registered during a week-long door to door campaign.

The Minister was briefed about the three-tier system recently launched by NADRA on two main entry and exit points in Swat. The Minister appreciated the system and asked for a proposal for replicating it in Quetta.

The Minister was also apprised of the various international projects which NADRA is undertaking in Sudan, Kenya, Nigeria and Bangladesh, while bids are being tendered for few projects in Libya, Kuwait, Iraq and Sri Lanka.

The Minister said Pakistan’s embassies in third world countries should highlight these successes and work to introduce NADRA to their countries of posting.
