Indian police brazenly insult VC Kashmir University

Srinagar, December 12, 2016 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, the highhandedness of Indian police has even not spared a person of Professor Khurshid Iqbal Andarbi’s caliber, who is not only the Vice-Chancellor of territory’s biggest University, but an acclaimed academic.

The Kashmir University Teachers Association (KUTA) in a statement issued in Srinagar condemned the disrespect and ill-treatment meted out to the Vice Chancellor, Professor Andrabi, by an officer of Indian police at Udhampur in Jammu region.

The officer in uniform, in a brazen violation of vice chancellor’s protocol kept Professor Andrabi waiting on a roadside for a long time even when the professor introduced himself to the officer, the statement said.

“KUTA condemns such acts by the officer, committed in the name of law. Academicians throughout the world are accorded highest respect but it is very unfortunate that in our own soil, they are insulted on roadsides. This act tantamount to insulting the whole academic fraternity,” it added.

“KUTA demands a through time-bound probe into the matter, strict action against the erring officer and an unconditional apology especially in the backdrop of the ulterior motivation to have all the media personnel in place waiting to stop the vehicle and insult Professor Andrabi before camera,” it said.

“Also it is for the top brass of police to explain how the officer is flaunting the unlawful act on his facebook page with absolute disregard to the honor of professor Andrabi. The teaching community of the territory is agitated over the issue and if no concrete action is taken, the onus of responsibility will lie on the shoulders of administration,” the spokesman warned.

Meanwhile, Kashmir University Officers Association (KUOA) also strongly condemned the ill treatment meted out to the Vice- Chancellor.
