Government not to compromise on transparency, integrity and efficiency in its service delivery: Minister

Islamabad, June 18, 2013 (PPI-OT): The government will not compromise on Transparency, Integrity and efficiency in its service delivery said Minister of State for Science and Technology, Engr. Khurram Dastgir Khan during a presentation on Pakistan Engineering Council here Tuesday.

The Minister was informed that PEC carries out accreditation of engineering education through the Engineering Accreditation and Qualification Equivalence Committee (EA and QEC) based on well recognized parameters and international practices for evaluation of engineering programmes. A total number of 249 engineering programmes have been accredited from 95 institutions/ universities in the country tio date. Many international forums have recognized the standards of PEC at par with international standards and have given membership to PEC.

The Minister was pleased to know that PEC is getting international recognition by joining the International forums and participating actively on engineering and technology. He was briefed that PEC is now an Associate Member, World Federation of Engineering Organization (WFEO), Member, Federation of Engineering Institutions of Islamic Countries (FEIIC) and Corresponding Member of Commonwealth Engineer’s Council (CEC), Member of Network of Accreditation Bodies of Engineering Education of Asia (NABEEA), provisional signatory of Washington Accord (WA) and IPEA. PEC has attained full membership of “Federation of Engineering Institutions of Asia and Pacific (FEIAP). PEC is also in close interaction with ABET -USA, IES-Singapore, BEM / IEM – Malaysia, EC-UK, ASIIN-Germany and ASCE . A FEIIC 5th World Engineering Congress, Islamabad is planned to be organized in Sep 2013 which will be hosted by PEC.

Minister lauded the performance of PEC to know that ‘’PEC has developed standards for engineering contracts, cost and services and 19 PEC Bidding/ Contracts Documents have been promulgated. PEC also took energy initiatives which include Energy Audit of PEC Building, Building Retrofitting for lights, Building Energy Code of Pakistan, 178 Kilo Watts On-Grid Solar System for PEC and Planning Commission’’. PEC has registered 154,000 engineers so far whereas 1574 consulting engineers, 62,070 constructors and 640 operators.

The Minister was informed that PEC had also developed Building Code of Pakistan (Seismic Provision-2007), Building Code of Pakistan (Energy Provisiosn-2011) and also working on Building Code of Pakistan (Fire Safety Provisions). PEC has recently signed MoU with USAID to develop National Electric Safety Code (NESC). Upon the implementation of these building codes, the minister directed the authority to write letters to the chief secretaries of the provinces to implement these code while approving any site plan.

Federal Sectary for Science and Technology, Akhlaq Ahmad Tarat, Chairman PEC Syed Abdul Qader Shah and senior officers of the council were also present on the occasion.
