Gilani, Shabbir, Nayeem put under house arrest

Srinagar, June 07, 2013 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, the authorities have placed the veteran Hurriyet leader, Syed Ali Gilani, and APHC leaders, Shabbir Ahmad Shah and Nayeem Ahmad Khan under house arrest. Syed Ali Gilani remains under house arrest in Srinagar since long time and is not allowed to address public meetings while Shabbir Ahmad Shah and Nayeem Ahmad Khan were placed under house arrest on Thursday as they were scheduled to visit the residences of two youth martyred by Indian troops in Pulwama district.

The authorities have deployed Indian policemen and paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force personnel at their residences and asking the leaders not to move out.

“Since return of Syed Ali Gilani from New Delhi in March this year, Gilani has been continuously placed under house arrest. The continued house arrest is taking a heavy toll on his health. He is even not allowed to offer Friday prayers.

This is sheer interference in his religious affairs. We strongly condemn the Indian establishment’s move and urge the international human rights organizations to take strong note of it,” said Ayaz Akbar, the spokesman of Gilani’s forum.

Meanwhile, Indian police arrested prominent religious scholar and President of Ummat-i-Islami, Qazi Yasir, near the Joint Interrogation Centre in Islamabad town while he was on his way back home after addressing people at Beeru on the occasion of Meraj-un-Nabi. He was also scheduled to address and lead protests after Friday prayers in the town against the Indian state terrorism.
