German grant of 1million Euro for Gilgit-Baltistan

Islamabad, March 27, 2014 (PPI-OT): Today, the Government of Pakistan received additional support of 1.00 million Euro for Gilgit Baltistan to be utilized under the Social Health Protection Scheme funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development through KFW Development Bank.

The agreement was signed by the Joint Secretary Economic Affairs Division Mr. Ali Raza Bhutta, the Director of the KFW Office Pakistan, KFW Development Bank Dr. Ms. Anna- Christine Janke and the Secretary Health of Gilgit Baltistan, Mr. Ali Rizvi in the presence of Ms. Mandy Zeckra, Economic Counselor at the German Embassy and Dr. Ms. Masuma Zaidi, Project Coordinator Health, KFW Office Pakistan.

The 5 year project totals an amount of 10.0 Million Euro out of which 9.00 Million Euro will be utilised in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The overall goal of the programme is to improve the health status of the population, especially the poor through providing a safety net and reducing out-of pocket payments for health expenditures. The insurance product would cover a family of seven of all ages.

Thus, financial barriers will be reduced in the programme region and qualified Main features of the scheme include a cashless system for service delivery from Public and Private health care providers, hospitalization services limited to Rs 25,000 per person annually, coverage of 21% of the poor households for which KFW Development Bank will initially provide the premiums with an increasing co-financing by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and GB The economic and financial development cooperation between Pakistan and Germany dates back to 1961, including trade investment exceeding € 2.5 billion.

In the health sector, KFW Development Bank invests on behalf of the German Government in health programs to improve mother and child health (MCH), to control the spread of communicable diseases like Tuberculosis, reconstruct Health Infrastructure in AJK, supply basic equipment project, support Social Health Protection, Safe Blood Transfusion systems and FATA Health Project.

Speaking on the occasion, the Joint Secretary, EAD and the Secretary Health, Gilgit Baltistan thanked the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and KFW Development Bank for supporting the social health protection initiative in various regions of Pakistan and hoped that the project would go a long way towards providing a safety net and universal coverage to the poor.
