Former DG BSF admits troops committed 1991 mass rape in IHK

Srinagar, June 17, 2013 (PPI-OT): Former Director General of Indian paramilitary, Border Security Force (BSF) has acknowledged that the personnel of 4th Rajputana Rifles were responsible for the Kunan Poshpora mass rape incident that occurred in 1991 in Kupwara.

Former DG BSF, E N Rammohan, who served as IG BSP in Kashmir Valley from 1993 to 1995, in a media interview in Srinagar said, “I arrived in Valley after unfortunate Kunan Poshpora mass rape incident and I by heart hold 4th Rajputana Rifles responsible for their barbaric acts.”

Former DG BSF said that he was ashamed at seeing the condition of rape victims in Kashmir. “There is not an iota of doubt in it that Indian personnel from 4th Rajputana Rifles raped the married and unmarried women of Kunan Poshpora and for this heinous crime they should be hanged without anymore delay,” he said.

He termed the incident as a blot on the Indian democracy.

E N Rammohan said that a soldier was meant for the protection of life while in Kashmir the personnel used the weapons to terrorize common people.

“I vehemently oppose the views of BJP leader L K Advani that soldiers should not be demoralized. Is a soldier meant to commit rapes and other crimes? Irrespective of status or rank, anyone found guilty is liable for prosecution and it is my belief that one day ‘rapists’ from 4th Rajputana Rifles would face the music.

He said that during his tenure he tried his best to stop human rights violations in Kashmir.
